Description:
The Design of the Shell House enjoys a deep connection to this place. Far from a reinterpretation of a
traditional cottage, this house expects a deeper commitment. While contemporary in its massing and
language, every design move connects the house with its site. The design of the house springs from
the main living “shell”. From the security of the shell the owners can witness the power of nature, view
the water, and smell the sea air. The shell represents a security from which one can venture or retreat.
The Shell House celebrates summer. It has been designed such that the main axis of the house aligns
with the sunset on the summer solstice. As the sun sets it will dip gracefully into the sea directly in
line with the linear pool extending from the main living space. The circulation through the house and
connecting the two guest houses happens within and along a curving wall running across the site. As
the resident traverses this path, they move from indoors to outdoors and experience the house from
varying vantage points. This wall is emphasized by its unique material. It also forms the front wall of
the house; providing a experiential contrast from public to private.
