Description: Located 96 kilometers (60 miles) southwest of Abu Dhabi on the Persian Gulf, the vision for the new town of Al Merfa is inspired by the organic patterns and human scale of older European town s – in dramatic contrast to the ultra-modern style of other developing areas along the gulf. The new town’s essential framework focuses on the unifying element of water, integrating a comprehensive network of primary and secondary canals that will provide an alternate transportation system for the project, reminiscent of Amsterdam and Venice. The central 240 hectare (600 acre) recreational lagoon functions as the town’s “center stage” providing a multitude of water recreation opportunities framed by a necklace of several hotel islands which also serve as the breakwater between the lagoon and the gulf.
