The 72-unit Artisan Walk located in the Emeryville/Oakland warehouse district was planned as an elegant response to the context of derelict warehouses, loft conversions and industrial uses. Built by The Olson Company, Artisan Walk was designed to provide a pleasant pedestrian experience by orienting units towards the street and providing access to front doors directly from the public sidewalk. This design gesture assures that the residents will take ownership of the neighborhood; creating a feeling that the development is an extension of the neighborhood, rather than an enclave apart from it. The buildings employ simple massing, echoing the existing context, while leaving no doubt about the residential nature of the community. A strong rhythm of building elements has been created along the street, breaking down the bulk of the buildings, helping to further the idea of individual homes. Artisan Walk was honored with a Gold Nugget Award of Merit.
