Description:
Whole Foods Market presents a unique contemporary design which integrates an existing historical structure (circa 1920) to offer an organic foods market and flagship westcoast store containing 90,000 SF on two levels with 3 levels of subterranean parking.
Once a repair depot for city buses, this structure adapts to its new role for store checkout. It received an exact replica of its old shed roof, structural wall bracing and extensive cosmetic restoration.
Expressing the successful resolution of all constraints, the architecture unifies new and historic components; provides targeted capacities and functions; and makes a significant aesthetic contribution to its heritage, mixed-use neighborhood.
